Taking a point below that of GCSE level, assuming no prior mathematical knowledge, Surinder Virdi and Roy Baker take the reader step by step through the mathematical requirements for Level 2 and 3 of construction courses.
Unlike most basic level math texts, this book focuses exclusively on mathematics as it applies in actual practice of construction. As such, topics specific to the construction industry are presented, as well as essential areas for Level 2 craft NVQs - for example, cost estimates, labor costs, material costs and the establishment of building .
The final chapter exercises cover a wide range of theoretical and practical problems that are found in construction practice, and two projects based on the tasks give students the opportunity to apply knowledge gained. Answers to all exercises are included at the end of the book. A chapter detailing the use of a scientific calculator to calculate construction will be invaluable for students with no previous experience of its use.

About the Author

Surinder Virdi is a professor of construction at South Birmingham College. Worked as a structural engineer for several years before starting his teaching career in education. He has been teaching mathematics, science and technology in the construction of nation building and BTEC Higher National courses for the past twenty years.
Roy Baker has just retired from the City of Wolverhampton College, where she worked in the department of construction of the past forty years. During the last twenty years has been a leader in construction equipment BTEC college and teaching mathematics, science and structural engineering. He has taken part-time teaching in the same subjects.
