Syllabuses have changed since the earlier editions of this book and have thus necessitated a change in emphasis towards providing the readers with the necessary background knowledge and understanding of the properties and processing of materials in order that he/she can make an intelligent selection of materials for specific uses and realise why decisions were made to use materials for particular purposes. Broadly speaking, Chapters 1 to 8 cover the 'Engineering Materials' unit of Level 3 unit of BTEC Nationals in Mechanical Engineering and lead into the remaining chapters which as a whole cover the 'Materials Engineering' unit of the BTEC Higher Nationals in Mechanical Engineering.
